Designing T-shirts began by accident. A party invitiation Graham created, called Man vs. Margarita (below), was so popular with guests that he received over a hundred requests for it on posters and T-shirts.
Seeing an opportunity he visited every bar/restaurant in New York City that mixed a margarita. After months of rejection, he finally convinced the most popular Mexican restaurant in the city (Carumba) to place an order. The shirt immediately sold out. More shirts followed and for years were regularly back-ordered from Hollywood to Tokyo.
Soon Sale created a line of shirts for the public. Once again he hit the streets. Amazingly, in four days he had over $17,000 in orders. His design company 90°Angle was born and quickly grew into a world-class business with millions of dollars in sales world-wide and licensed products. Today many of Graham's images are considered NYC icons and still sell over a decade after their release. His recognizable style is often imitated and has influenced many artists. But no one can truly imitate Graham's distinctive humor or way with words.
